Greece History I chose to write about Greece because it is one of dream vacation spots. Greece is so beautiful to me, I have always wanted to go because of the dreamy sunsets and the architecture. "During the so-called “Greek Dark Ages” before the Archaic period, people lived scattered throughout Greece in small farming villages. As they grew larger, these villages began to evolve. Some built walls. Most built a marketplace (an agora) and a community meeting place." They developed governments and organized their citizens according to some sort of constitution or set of laws. They raised armies and collected taxes. And every one of these city-states (known as poleis) was said to be protected by a particular god or goddess, to whom the citizens of the polis owed a great deal of reverence, respect and sacrifice. (Athens’s deity was Athena, for example; so was Sparta’s.)" "The Dark Age was a transitional period between the fall of Mycenaean Greece of the Bronze Age, an

The Age of Digital Information   In this blog, I will be talking about the era of information technology. As we all know, many good things have come from technology. It has been a significant help in many areas of our lives. Technology has enabled us to communicate with people located across the world within a few seconds, purchase things online, buy items with plastic instead of cash, etc. While technology has helped us in many areas, it has hurt us in many areas as well. In this blog, we will see the different ways in which technology has been detrimental to the human population. The Age of Digitial Information relates to these art pieces because it raises awareness of technology abuse. We don't always use technology for good.  Media Mark The location in which this piece was created is unknown. This art piece was created in 2016 by Andreas Gursky and it expresses the overstimulation we face on a day-to-day basis. The Age of Digitial Information relates to this picture because now

The Great Depression   "The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world, lasting from 1929 to 1939. It began after the stock market crash of October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors. Over the next several years, consumer spending and investment dropped, causing steep declines in industrial output and employment as failing companies laid off workers." This time was extremely challenging for many individuals as they were struggling to make ends meet. This ultimately led to failed banks and a loss of consumer confidence. The effects of the stock market crash were perpetuated by the loss of consumer confidence, making The Great Depression last ten years.  The Pensive Man This was one of the many art pieces created during the great depression. Many artists found relief in expressing themselves through art. This specific art piece was created by Seymour Fogel in 1936. The exact location wh

IMPRESSIONISM VS ROMANTICISM Impressionism “Impressionism is perhaps the most important movement in the whole of modern painting. At some point in the 1860s, a group of young artists decided to paint, very simply, what they saw, thought, and felt. They weren’t interested in painting history, mythology, or the lives of great men, and they didn’t seek perfection in visual appearances.” This was a great time for artists as they were able to paint freely without the pressure of having to create a painting that coincides with history or mythology. I feel like this enabled artists to express themselves freely without constraints.  Romanticism “At the end of the 18th century and well into the 19th, Romanticism quickly spread throughout Europe and the United States to challenge the rational ideal held so tightly during the Enlightenment. The artists emphasized that sense and emotions - not simply reason and order - were equally important means of understanding and experiencing the world.” Th

Art and Revolution During The Neoclassical Period Intro "Classical art, or Classicism, refers to artwork that draws inspiration from ancient Roman or ancient Greek culture, architecture, literature, and art. Classicism was most popular in Western art during the Renaissance period and often depicted scenes from mythology through painting, sculpture, and printmaking. Classicism informs much of the subject matter depicted in history painting".   During this era, many things changed. Art was looked at in a way that it had never been seen before. Many artists were making their mark throughout this period. "Throughout 1770 and 1820  drawings reflected social, political, and intellectual upheaval in the late 18th century ."  For that reason, many pieces of artwork based on the revolution can be found. Let's look at some paintings that tie into revolution and art. James Peale and the Battle of Princeton James Peale was a neoclassical artist.  In this piece, we can see t

The Head of Medusa In honor of Halloween, I chose to do my assignment on The Head of Medusa by Caravaggio. Caravaggio was born in Milan, but this painting was created in Uffizi, Florence. Medusa Is well-known in  Greek Mythology, on her head there were snakes, and she could turn anybody into stone through eye contact, she was ultimately decapitated by Perseus. Caravaggio was an artist of the late 1500s/early 1600s, The Head of Medusa was one of his most popular art pieces. Caravaggio was also one of the first artists who contributed to the baroque art  movement. Baroque art can be described as art that clearly expresses human emotions by focusing primarily on expressions. “The Head of Medusa executed by Caravaggio, in 1598, was commissioned as a ceremonial shield by Cardinal Francesco Maria Del Monte, the Medici family agent in Rome, after seeing, in the painter's studio, the first version - The Medusa painting. The purpose of this commission was to symbolize the Grand Duke of Tusc

The Creation of Adam History: "Michelangelo , in full  Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni , (born March 6, 1475, Caprese, Republic of Florence  [Italy]—died February 18, 1564, Rome, Papal States), Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, and poet who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art." Michelangelo's Creation of Adam was created in 1512 in Vatican City during the Italian Renaissance. This painting illustrates God's creation of man. On the right is God and on the left is Eve. God is reaching over to Eve to give him life. God seems to be surrounded by angels.  Appearance: I have never seen the whole painting, only the hands. Many people get this tattooed but I never knew where it originated. You can see that God is reaching forward as his hair is blowing back, Adam seems to have just woken up as he is not reaching as much as God is. Around God there are 12 Angels, to his side, there is a woman. Some people believe this
