Art During The Renaissance

The Creation of Adam

History:

"Michelangelo, in full Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, (born March 6, 1475, Caprese, Republic of Florence [Italy]—died February 18, 1564, Rome, Papal States), Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, and poet who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art." Michelangelo's Creation of Adam was created in 1512 in Vatican City during the Italian Renaissance. This painting illustrates God's creation of man. On the right is God and on the left is Eve. God is reaching over to Eve to give him life. God seems to be surrounded by angels.

Appearance:

I have never seen the whole painting, only the hands. Many people get this tattooed but I never knew where it originated. You can see that God is reaching forward as his hair is blowing back, Adam seems to have just woken up as he is not reaching as much as God is. Around God there are 12 Angels, to his side, there is a woman. Some people believe this woman is Mary and others believe it is Eve.

Color:

The colors in this painting seem to be warm. There is not much versatility in colors as the painting does not require it. The background is very natural as well. There is a green scarf on one of the Angels which stands out because he is the only one wearing it.

Shape:

God seems to be inside a heart as he is reaching for Adam. It has a somewhat oval shape with some openings at the top. Adam is lying on what seems to be the top of a mountain. On the other side, God seems to be floating while supported by his angels.

Texture:

Overall, the texture of Adam, God, and the Angels are all smooth. However, the ground that Adam is lying on seems to be a bit hard but it still looks smooth.

Conclusion:

The creation of Adam was a part of the Sistine ceiling. "in 1508, Julius called Michelangelo back to Rome for a less expensive, but still ambitious painting project: to depict the 12 apostles on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel a most sacred part of the Vatican where new popes are elected and inaugurated". Because Michelangelo was comissioned by the pope, there is a conncetion to the Reivention of Rome by Catholic Church. Although this painting was interesting to learn about, I would not own a copy because this is not the type of art I like.
